Kashi Road National Route 289 – from Nishigo to Shimogo in Fukushima

with No Comments

This time I ran on Kashi Road, so I would like to introduce it.

It is a 23.3km (14.6miles) road connecting Shimogo Town and Nishigo Village across Mt. Kashi. The road is wide enough and paved properly.

This area was blocked by a steep pass and was impassable the section including the Kashi tunnel was opened on Sep. 21, 2008 and impassable problem was resolved. The remaining section of about 2.6 km in Shimogo Town was opened on Mar. 25, 2019, and the entire line was opened.

There is an unused fork on the right side in the tunnel. Due to heavy rain caused by typhoon No. 6 in July 2002, a landslide occurred underground near another tunnel, so two tunnels and two bridges were abandoned, branched in the middle of this tunnel, and they had created a new tunnel through the mountains on the south side of the old route with a curve. This Kibitaki tunnel opened on April 3, 2006.

The “Kashi Tunnel” which is the keystone of the Kashi Road is the longest tunnel in Fukushima Prefecture that passes through the impassable Mt. Kashi (EL. 5082ft). This tunnel made it easier to come and go between Nakadori and the Aizu and is also important as a tourist route.

Uplift of the road surface was discovered in the tunnel in Mar. 2011, so emergency work was also carried out, but the uplift has not subsided and full-scale repair work has been carried out since 2018.

The open scenery around here is really nice. I hope you enjoy the video.
