The Nissoku Tunnel in Nikko

with No Comments

The Nissoku Tunnel is on the Japanese National Route 122 that connects Kiyotaki and Ashio districts of Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture.

The tunnel was opened on March 30, 1978, and the speed limit is 40km/h for all lines.

The old winding road of Hoso-o Pass is narrow and the cars cannot pass each other, which caused chronic traffic jam as the aorta connecting Nikko and Ashio.

To solve this problem, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at Tochigidaira on October 22, 1973, and after spending four and a half years, the tunnel was opened on March 30, 1978.

The total construction cost is 6.5 billion yen, the tunnel width is 9m, and the total length is 2,765m.

This tunnel became the new road of the Route 122, and the Hosoo Pass route was downgraded to the old road. And a tunnel opening monument was built near the entrance.

Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy the view of the tunnel.
